Trump praises Syria’s “tremendous progress” under al-Sharaa
"As you know, the leader of Syria was just here. We had a great meeting, and he's strong guy, and I guess you need a strong person to run it. And I think Syria has made tremendous progress," Trump said while hosting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House.
Trump added that sanctions were lifted at the request of the crown prince and with support from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. "Between the two of them and some others, I lifted the sanctions, and the results so far been pretty good," he said.
Since Bashar al-Assad’s ouster last year, Syria has sought to expand cooperation with regional and international partners, including the US, and to lift economic and political sanctions to rebuild the war-torn nation. Some sanctions, including the delisting of senior Syrian officials from US and UN terror-related sanctions, have already been removed.
The lifting of remaining sanctions, such as the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act, has gained backing from key lawmakers, though full removal requires Congressional approval, while the administration can waive them for 180-day periods, as Trump did ahead of al-Sharaa’s visit.
