Forest Fires Erupt in Syria’s Latakia Countryside
The fire broke out Friday in the village of Bashoura and spread rapidly, fueled by strong winds, according to media. Authorities from the Emergency and Disaster Management Ministry, along with the Agriculture Ministry, have dispatched teams to contain the flames.
Mahmoud Al-Shariqi, commander of the Civil Defense team in Latakia, described the operation’s difficulties: “Operations have been hampered by difficult terrain, fast-moving winds, and the presence of unexploded ordnance left over from the war in nearby areas – hazards that require extreme caution from responders.”
Despite these challenges, Al-Shariqi said, “Teams are working at full capacity” and expressed optimism that efforts to extinguish active flames, cool hotspots, and prevent further spread would succeed in the coming hours.
Western Syria, particularly Latakia, has experienced repeated forest and agricultural fires this summer. The combination of soaring temperatures, dry conditions, and dense forests has contributed to severe fire outbreaks.
In July, wildfires in the Latakia mountains raged for 12 days, destroying more than 16,000 hectares (39,537 acres) of woodland, including 2,200 hectares of farmland, and impacting 45 villages and roughly 1,200 families.
