French FM Syria shouldn’t live under fear, arbitrariness

(MENAFN) France said Monday that Syria must not slip back into repression as the country marks one year since the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, in a message on X, recalled the moment Assad’s rule ended, saying it should stand as a definitive break from decades of authoritarian control.

“A year ago, Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime collapsed. The hell of the Sednaya prison came to an end. This moment must remain a point of no return. Syria can no longer live under fear and arbitrariness,” he wrote, calling for accountability for victims and lasting security for the Syrian population.

Assad, who had governed for nearly a quarter century, fled to Russia last December, bringing an end to the Baath Party’s rule that had dominated Syria since 1963.
