ISIS kills two US servicemembers in Syria
US President Donald Trump vowed a “very serious retaliation” and attributed the attack to the terrorist group Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS). “This was an ISIS attack against the US, and Syria, in a very dangerous part of Syria that is not fully controlled by them. The president of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is extremely angry and disturbed by this attack,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Local reports indicate the attack occurred near the central Syrian town of Palmyra, where a joint patrol of Syrian government forces and US troops came under fire, injuring at least two Syrian servicemen. Traffic along the Damascus-Deir ez-Zor highway was temporarily halted, and the area around Palmyra was cordoned off. Footage circulating online showed multiple US military aircraft flying at low altitude in the region.
The Syrian Interior Ministry stated it had previously warned the US-led coalition of a “possible” ISIS attack. Ministry spokesman Anwar al-Baba claimed these prior warnings of “possible IS infiltration” were ignored by the “partner forces” during a televised address.
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who control northeastern Syria and have long been allied with Washington, extended their “deepest condolences” to the US and reaffirmed their commitment to “combat terrorism,” pledging a “decisive and direct” response “against those responsible for the attack and those who support them.”
The SDF did not reference the Syrian government in its statement, as tensions with Damascus persist. The Syrian government has been attempting to bring SDF-held territories under direct control for months, but no resolution has yet been achieved.
