US Sen. calls repeal of Caesar Act as pivotal moment for Syria’s future
In a statement, she said: "Today’s repeal of the Caesar Act is a decisive step toward giving the Syrian people a real chance to rebuild after decades of unimaginable suffering."
Her comments followed Senate approval of the National Defense Authorization Act, a wide-ranging defense bill valued at $901 billion that sets out Pentagon priorities and funding for 2026, as stated by reports.
The legislation, which spans more than 3,000 pages, includes significant allocations such as $800 million designated for Ukraine, along with $400 million annually over the next two years under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. It also contains provisions ending Caesar Act sanctions imposed on Syria during the previous leadership of Bashar al-Assad, according to reports.
She attributed the inclusion of the sanctions repeal to bipartisan collaboration, highlighting the role of a senior US lawmaker as well as the US ambassador to Türkiye, whom she praised for sustained diplomatic efforts centered on regional security.
Commenting on the broader implications, she added: "This step will advance America’s national security by promoting stability in an unsettled region, helping to deny ISIS a safe haven and preventing Iran from exercising its dangerous influence."
According to reports, the senator previously led a bipartisan congressional delegation to Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan in August. During that period, she met Syria’s president on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York and later held further discussions during his visit to Washington, DC.
