Erdogan Insists on Unified Syria, Rejects Separate Armed Groups

(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday declared that Syria cannot host a “state within a state” or maintain separate armed forces, stressing that the ongoing crisis must be resolved peacefully and in accordance with existing agreements.

Speaking at the International Contracting Services Award Ceremony, Erdogan emphasized that a political solution aligned with the spirit of prior agreements remains the only realistic path forward.

He highlighted the toll of prolonged conflict on Syrian civilians, noting that men, women, and children are exhausted by years of violence and are seeking peace and stability. “The shelf life of terror, violence, and weapons has expired; their era is over. In particular, there is no longer any possibility of achieving results by pushing children as young as 14 or 15 to the front, hiding behind them, and exploiting their blood and lives,” Erdogan said.

He also called on communities in Syria, particularly Kurdish citizens, “not to fall for schemes that aim to undermine our eternal brotherhood and sow discord among us.”

Meanwhile, Syria has extended a ceasefire with the YPG/SDF terrorist group by 15 days, according to the Syrian Defense Ministry. The extension, which will cover all operational sectors of the Syrian Army, took effect at 11 p.m. on Jan. 24, 2026.
