Erdogan, Trump Discuss Developments in Syria, Gaza Board of Peace

(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Donald Trump held a phone call on Tuesday to discuss recent developments in Syria and the Gaza Board of Peace. The conversation also touched on bilateral trade, particularly in the defense sector, as well as broader regional and global issues.

Erdogan emphasized that Türkiye will continue to strengthen cooperation with the United States and advance relations across all sectors in the mutual interest of both countries. He underscored Ankara’s commitment to the full implementation of the ceasefire and integration agreement in neighboring Syria, noting that Türkiye is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with both US and Syrian authorities.

The Turkish leader also expressed hope that the Gaza Board of Peace would yield meaningful results, stating that ending the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and supporting reconstruction efforts could pave the way for long-term peace in the region.

Trump highlighted the recent establishment of the Gaza Board of Peace on January 15, which forms part of his broader plan for the territory and follows the ceasefire agreement. The board was subsequently authorized by the UN Security Council through Resolution 2803 in November 2025.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire. Since October 2023, the Israeli army’s offensive has reportedly killed more than 71,600 people, most of them women and children, and injured over 171,300. Despite the ceasefire, attacks have continued, resulting in an additional 484 deaths and 1,321 injuries, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
