US, European Allies Hail Fifteen-Day Ceasefire in Syria

(MENAFN) The United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany expressed support on Tuesday for the Syrian Defense Ministry’s decision to prolong the ceasefire with the YPG/SDF group by an additional 15 days.

In a collaborative statement, the four nations welcomed the arrangement between the Syrian army and YPG/SDF, emphasizing the need for all sides to honor the truce and exercise maximum restraint.

"We urge all external parties to join us in pursuit of peace and de-escalation of violence," the statement said, issued following consultations between high-level officials from the four countries, including the French Foreign Minister, the British Foreign Secretary, the German Deputy Foreign Minister, and the US Special Envoy.

The declaration also underscored the responsibility of all involved to safeguard civilians and civilian facilities. It further praised the creation of humanitarian corridors to facilitate safe and uninterrupted delivery of aid, according to reports.

"We urge all parties to swiftly agree to a permanent ceasefire, and to resume as soon as possible negotiations aiming at the peaceful and sustainable integration of North-East Syria into a unitary and sovereign state that effectively respects and protects the rights of all its citizens, based on the 18 January 2026 agreement, as the most effective path to stability in Syria."

The statement stressed the importance of preventing any security gaps in and around ISIS (Daesh) detention centers. To address these risks, it noted that the parties had agreed to convene an immediate meeting of the International Coalition against ISIS.

"We reaffirm our support for an inclusive political transition in Syria, which protects the rights of all Syrians, and emphasise that the stabilization of North-East Syria through peaceful means constitutes a central priority for preventing a resurgence of terrorism and for regional security," it added.

Finally, the four Western powers emphasized their willingness to collaborate with regional and international partners to support and monitor the implementation of agreements reached between the parties, as stated by reports.
