UN Raises Alarm Over Civilian Safety in Southern Syria

(MENAFN) The UN human rights office has raised concerns over increasing dangers faced by civilians in southern Syria, warning that expanded military activity by Israeli forces is putting local populations at serious risk.

According to reports from Geneva, spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan said the UN is receiving “mounting protection concerns for civilians in southern Syria, where expanding operations by Israeli forces occupying these areas are placing lives at risk.”

He added that everyday rights, including family life and privacy, are being increasingly restricted, while livelihoods—especially in farming communities—are being heavily disrupted.

Al-Kheetan also pointed to reports of harassment, intimidation, detentions, interrogations, home raids, and movement restrictions. In particular, he referenced activity in the Quneitra governorate, where Israeli forces are said to have set up checkpoints, searched houses, and detained civilians.

Citing Syrian authorities, he said that at least 250 people, including children, have been arrested in southern Syria since the fall of the former government, with around 50 still in detention. Some of those detained were reportedly transferred to prisons in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The UN also expressed concern over reported Israeli plans to expand settlements in the occupied Syrian Golan, including proposals to bring in approximately 3,000 Israeli families. The spokesperson said such actions would violate international humanitarian law.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, as quoted by the spokesperson, urged Israel “to bring an end to all violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in Syria,” adding that settlement expansion “must also stop.”
