Sharaa Reaffirms Syria’s Claim to Golan Heights
Speaking at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Sharaa said efforts to establish new realities on the ground cannot alter Syria’s sovereignty, the rule of law or the application of international law.
“The Golan will remain Syrian land,” he said, adding that all annexation measures are invalid under UN Security Council Resolution 497.
Sharaa also cited a UN General Assembly vote in December 2025, when 123 countries supported a resolution addressing the occupied Syrian Golan. He expressed appreciation to those that backed the measure and called on countries that abstained to reconsider their position regarding Resolution 497.
He accused Israel of conducting nearly 500 air and artillery strikes, carrying out more than 1,200 incursions and detaining around 300 Syrians. Sharaa said these actions threaten Syria’s stability, challenge international consensus and bring back memories of a difficult period that Syrians had only recently begun to leave behind.
Sharaa reiterated that Damascus remains committed to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and continues to demand the withdrawal of Israeli forces to the positions they held before Dec. 8, 2024.
